We are deeply concerned by the situation between Montclair State University and Emily Johnson. Recently, artist Emily Johnson published a letter containing troubling allegations against MSU, PEAK Performances, and its Executive Director, Jedediah Wheeler (MSU published this response). Wet Ink has been working with PEAK Performances at MSU on our production of Kate Soper's opera, The Romance of the Rose, which was canceled from PEAK's spring 2020 season due to the pandemic. While we appreciate the support that PEAK Performances has offered us in the past, we believe it is important for artists to support each other in advocating for fair and transparent working conditions. We do not want our project to endorse an abusive culture, or to ask any of our team members to work in an unfair or unsafe environment. For these reasons, we have come to the decision that we do not feel comfortable moving forward with our collaboration with PEAK Performances at this time. We look forward to presenting Kate's opera in the future under circumstances that reflect Wet Ink's values of inclusion and respect, and our commitment to artists.
