Kate Soper - Managing Director/Voice
Kate Soper is a Michigan-born, New York-based composer with a diverse background. Currently pursuing a doctorate in composition at Columbia University, where she focuses primarily on concert music, she has written music for dance, film, theatre and electronics. Recent performances include commissions from the Tanglewood Music Center/BUTI, the Museum of Biblical Art, and the Kenners Ensemble, and performances by Dinosaur Annex, the Due East Ensemble, the Second Instrumental Unit, and Newspeak. She has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and ASCAP and has attended summer festivals at the Tanglewood Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival, June in Buffalo, the Norfolk Contemporary Music Workshop, the Wellesley Composers Conference, and the Ostrava Days festival.
As a singer with experience in Western Classical and Indian Carnatik music, pop and improvisation, Kate performs frequently in her own works as well as those of her colleagues. She has worked extensively as a piano-based singer-songwriter, producing four albums from 2000-2004, and has premiered concert works by Richard Carrick, Alex Mincek, and Aaron Siegal. She received her Bachelor of Music in 2003 from Rice University, where she studied with Karim Al-Zand, Anthony Brandt, and Shih-Hui Chen. In New York, her teachers have included Fred Lerdahl, Mario Davidovsky, and Fabien Levy.
