Joshua Modney - Violin
Violinist Joshua Modney has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble member throughout the United States and Europe. He has appeared at venues in New York City including Zankel Hall and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Rose Studio at Lincoln Center, The Kitchen, Merkin Hall, The Stone, Le Poisson Rouge, and Roulette. In a recent performance of Alban Berg's Kammerkonzert for violin, piano, and wind ensemble, the New York Times lauded, "Joshua Modney, the violin soloist, was superb." In August 2009, he will be a fellow at the Lucerne Festival Academy under the direction of Pierre Boulez in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Mr. Modney has been featured as soloist on numerous occasions, performing repertoire by Berg, Mozart, Zappa, Lou Harrison, Daugherty, Pärt, and Schnittke. An impassioned performer of new music, Mr. Modney has had many compositions dedicated to him, including several works for unaccompanied violin, and a concerto by Robert Pierzak, doppiero... twoja wiara dziwna, for violin and 21 strings (premiered 2007). Mr. Modney is committed to presenting performances that make the music of our time enlightening for all concertgoers.
Mr. Modney performs with Wet Ink Ensemble, MIVOS quartet, Columbia Composers, TACTUS Ensemble, Signal Ensemble, and the Auer Trio, which won the Lillian Fuchs Memorial Chamber Music Competition at Manhattan School of Music for their performance of Trio für Violine, Horn, und Klavier by György Ligeti. As an orchestral musician, Mr. Modney performed with the National Repertory Orchestra for three seasons, including a solo performance in 2008. He also served as concertmaster in the Ithaca College Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for two years.
Mr. Modney was a member of the first class to graduate from the Masters Degree in Contemporary Violin Performance at Manhattan School of Music, a program which is unique in the United States. He studied at MSM under Curtis Macomber. Mr. Modney holds a Bachelors Degree in Violin Performance from Ithaca College, where he studied with Susan Waterbury. In addition to his performing activities, Mr. Modney enjoys spending time cycling, hiking, and running.
