Brian Griffeath-Loeb - Director of Operations

Brian Griffeath-Loeb (b. 1981) is a fresh, emerging voice in the world of contemporary music. His work focuses on chaotic behavior, extended instrumental soundworlds, space, silence, frailty, and collaborative experimentation. He holds degrees in composition from UC San Diego, the Royal College of Music (London), and Dartmouth College. Principal studies with Rand Steiger, and Charles Dodge. Additional studies with Roger Reynolds, David Sawer, Edwin Roxburgh, Kui Dong, Larry Polansky, and John Appleton. Up- coming projects include a piano solo for Luciane Cardassi as part of a Banff Centre creative residency, a quartertone bass flute solo for rarescale Artistic Director Carla Rees, a large-scale ensemble piece based on the work of American mathematician John Hubbard, and a series of sight-specific installations (e.g., Keyhole Listening and Oily Interventions) showing intermittently throughout the San Diego area.

An active scholar, Griffeath-Loeb has written on such topics as Spaciousness through Sound, Structural Hierarchy, and Gérard Grisey's Prologue, and will be publishing an online performance catalog of traditional and extended techniques for tuba with fellow UCSD grad, Jonathan Piper. He has given lectures and presentations on his work at Dartmouth College, the Royal College of Music, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, and UW Madison.

Projects in arts administration include organizing/fundraising with the Formalist String Quartet, rarescale artistic director Carla Rees, Wet Ink, Graeme Jennings and Chris Burns (also feat. Tom Johnson), Red Light New Music, and The Kenners duo, as well as the commissioning of over 20 new works by fellow composers. He is Director of Operations for the Wet Ink Ensemble, board member for the Menlo-Atherton Academy of Contemporary Music, and founder of New Music at UCSD and the Spring into New Music Concert Series.
