ENSEMBLE & LARGE ENSEMBLE
Wet Ink's two main performing groups.

The Wet Ink Ensemble is Wet Ink's primary performing and touring group, a core of composer-performers that collaborate in a band-like fashion, writing, improvising, preparing, and touring pieces together over long stretches of time. The Ensemble is comprised of Wet Ink's seven co-directors: Erin Lesser (flute), Alex Mincek (saxophone), Eric Wubbels (piano), Ian Antonio (percussion), Josh Modney (violin), Kate Soper (voice), and Sam Pluta (electronics).

The Wet Ink Large Ensemble is a group of elite New York City musicians that come together several times each year to play the world's most exciting and innovative music. The group has given the US and World premieres of works by composers Mincek, Pluta, Soper, Wubbels, Furrer, Ablinger, Saunders, Barrett, Lang, Hough, Spahlinger, and many more. Recordings of the Large Ensemble can be heard on the Carrier, hat[now]ART, Tzadik, and Quiet Design record labels. Frequent collaborators in the Large Ensemble include Peter Evans, Ryan Muncy, Laura Barger, Russell Greenberg, Mariel Roberts, Jacqui Kerrod, and Greg Chudzik, among others.

TOURING SUBSETS
Evening-length, extended, and multimedia programs featuring modular chamber configurations of Wet Ink's core of composer-performers.

Ipsa Dixit, by Kate Soper, is an ongoing exploration of the intersections of music and language via a skeptical take on the role of the singer as gatekeeper of meaning, sentiment, and expressivity. Stemming from the Wet Ink Ensemble’s unique practice of composer/performer collaboration, Ipsa Dixit has grown into an evening-length piece that blends monodrama and theatre to skewer the treachery of speech and test the limits of ensemble virtuosity.

In the 2015-16 Season, Wet Ink continues to explore Mathias Spahlinger's magnificent and rarely-performed "extension" for violin and piano, following a performance in March 2015 at "There is No Repeition: Mathias Spahlinger at 70" at the University of Chicago, the first major retrospective of Spahlinger's work in the US. Nearly an hour long, "extension" probes the foundations of Western music while placing exceeding technical and musical demands on the performers.

Hydra is a trio formation of Wet Ink focused on electro-acoustic and amplified works for violin, piano & electronics. Hydra programs employ a vast range of expressive tools, from text recitation and theater (Rick Burkhardt's "TED"), to Just Intonation, virtuosic extended repetition, and noise (Wubbels's "the children of fire come looking for fire"), and acousmatic, live processed, and aleatoric music (Pluta's "Hydra").
